Project Overview

The Client experienced a failure on underground 5kV power cables providing power to an electrical building on site. Temporary 5kV power cables were installed at grade to restore operation to the facility and a project was initiated to install a permanent, above ground solution. The execution of this project was expedited as the temporary cables were in violation of the applicable regulatory electrical codes and standards. It was determined that a new incoming switchgear cell was required as the existing cell was not suitable for the installation of top-entry, shielded cables.

Determine a Solution

Rally collaborated with the Client to determine the optimal above-ground solution and completed a laser scan of the facility. It was determined that the project would install a new above grade cable tray rack. After completion of the laser scan, Rally suggested a route along the site fence line that resulted in a 50% reduction in cable tray length. This greatly reduced both the cost (by ~$1M) and construction duration, and allowed the client to meet their installation goal.

Project Execution

The outage window provided to allow for the switch from the temporary cables to the new cables was 24 hours. Rally worked with the client to maximize the pre-outage scope within the design such that this outage window was sufficient. Similarly, Rally provided field engineering support as required during the project to avoid any potential RFI delays.
